Garden Bylaws

PLEASANT GROVE WEST STAKE GARDEN BYLAWS

May 1, 2016

This document in its entirety, collectively and individual will be the determining guideline for the Pleasant Grove West Stake Garden (PGWSG).  Any rule, regulation, guideline or notice in relation to the PGWSG is superseded by this document.

These guidelines are written and will be enforced by the Pleasant Grove West Stake garden committee to help everyone in the garden community have a rewarding and safe gardening experience.

DEFINITIONS

PLOT: Refers to your specific plot assignment, no matter the number of individual plots you have been assigned.  Each individual plot is designated as a 10’ X 15’ area.

WATER: Refers to the water supplied by the Stake through the main line and the 6 laterals laid through the whole garden area supplying water to the individual plots via shut-off valves.

REGULATIONS

PLOT MAINTENANCE: Individuals will ensure that ropes, strings and other material used to “fence off their plot is secured in a way to not interfere with other adjoining plots or the pathways.  Rocks, stakes, Windmills, Gnomes, any decorative material, tomato cages or plant supports and drip lines will be removed at the end of the gardening season.  Any of these materials left in the garden plots at fall cleanup time will become the property of the Stake and will be distributed to others the following spring garden season.  Individuals are to supply their own seed and fertilizer.

WATERING: Individuals are responsible to provide and remove their own drip line watering materials.  Water to the plot control valves is provided every day for 3 hours.  This should provide more than adequate water if properly controlled with the plot control valve.  You have to control your own watering with the plot control valve.  Any flooding of adjacent plots due to improper water control or leaks in their drip system will require the water to the plot causing the flooding to be turned off and the individual notified by a member of the Stake Garden Committee.  Only drip systems may be used. No water spraying outlets may be used as they disrupt the drip system pressure and cause flooding.

WEED CONTROL: It is individual responsibility to maintain weed control and all plant growth in your plot and the pathway adjoining your plot.  This includes keeping squash, watermelon and pumpkin vines out of adjoining plots and the pathways.  Individuals not maintaining control of weeds will be notified and asked to do better controlling weeds in their plot.  NO PLASTIC OR GROUND COVERS ARE PERMITTED ON ANY PLOTS TO CONTROL WEEDS.  THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.

PLOT ABANDONMENT: After multiple contacts or an individual is not able to be contacted regarding their plot (attempts will be recorded by the Stake Garden Committee), the assigned plots will be acquired by the Stake Garden Committee and reassigned.  If requested and assigned plots are not used or the Stake Garden Committee contacted by June 1st, the plot will be acquired by the Stake Garden Committee and reassigned.

GARDENING TOOLS: Individuals are expected to provide their own tools (shovel, hoe, rake, etc.) to maintain their garden.  There are some used tools located at the pump house.  If these tools are borrowed, we ask that they be returned so others may benefit from their availability.  IT IS NOT OKAY TO BORROW TOOLS FROM OTHER GARDENERS WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION.

GARDEN CLEANUP: Those who grow corn, sunflowers or tall growing or large vine vegetables must either remove the stocks or vines from the garden area or cut them into short one foot pieces toreduce fall plowing and tilling problems.

BARTERING: Individuals are free to barter, share or trade any or all of their harvest with other individuals.  DO NOT TAKE PRODUCE FROM OTHER GARDENS WITHOUT PERMISSION.

PERSONAL ITEMS: The Stake Garden Committee is not responsible for lost items in the garden area.  It is a large area and if you are not careful, it is easy to lose track of where you might have placed something.

DRIVING: It is not permitted to drive into the garden area without approval by the Stake Garden Committee.  If you have a need to place a large amount of soil amendment or masonry to your garden plot you are to get approval from the Stake Garden Committee first.  The Stake Garden Committee is not responsible for damage that might happen to your vehicle or any extension while in the Stake Garden Area.  DO NOT PARK IN THE DoTerra PARKING LOT AT ANY TIME!!

PETS: Pets are welcome in the Stake Garden Area.  Please be responsible for your pets to prevent damage to other gardens and remove any deposits they may leave behind.

This document may be revised or amended by the Pleasant Grove West Stake Garden Committee and any revision or amendment will be sent out by email to all individuals providing an email address when they sign up for a plot assignment.  IT IS REQUIRED THAT ALL INDIVIDUALS RECEIVING A PLOT ASSIGNMENT GIVE THEIR EMAIL ADDRESS AND TELEPHONE NUMBER FOR THE STAKE GARDEN COMMITTEE TO MAKE CONTACT FOR ANY REASON.

Garden Set-up

Hey All,

We are excited for the start of another great season of gardening.  To begin, we need about 30 able bodies to help set up the hoses and mark individual plots this Saturday (May 7th) at 8:00 am.  The set-up should take about 30 minutes and your help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday!

General information 2016

Hello fellow gardeners and welcome to the Pleasant Grove West Stake Community Garden!
Here are a few tips to help you have a productive experience here at the garden:

1.  Get your plot assignment by sending request to pgwsgardencommittee.com

There will be several watering cans and garden tools for loan up by the pump house.  Please be sure to return them there after each use so others may also benefit from them.  There are also several hose bibs on the West side of the garden.  Please try to limit any spillage there as they tend to turn muddy quickly when all 400+ of us use them regularly.  Place the end of the hose toward the fence when done with them please.

2.  Plan your garden for the maximum efficiency and usage of space. There will be no ground cover used in the Stake Garden 2016 season.

3.  Start planting your cool season crops.  These will include:  Peas, Onions, Broccoli and other Brassicas, Potatoes, most other root crops.

4. Obtain your irrigation equipment and set them up.  You will buy your own lines and drip systems.  Make sure you leave your main valve OFF when you first set it up.  Once the water is up and running you may then adjust it to your own desired flow rate.  Visit your plot daily for the next few days to ensure that you have it adjusted well.

5.  Start weeding.  Weeding is best accomplished when you start early in the season and never let up.  It is not acceptable to use chemical herbicides on your plot.

6.  After Mother's Day is generally when you can expect the frosts to stop so plant your warm season vegetables after that unless you have methods to protect your tender vegetables.

7.  Keep weeding.  You might want to reach across to the next plot and pull a few that are within reach there as well.

8.  Respect your own and other people's garden as well.  Do not be tempted to harvest from their hard work.  Please also teach your children to stay out of them as well.

9.  It's wonderful and instructive to see how other people do their gardens and how they occasionally decorate them too.  If you choose to decorate your garden please remember that occasionally, small brightly colored objects appear like toys to small children and they may come up missing.  Please do not  consider this malevolence.  It's usually only a small child that doesn't know any better yet.

10.  A note on pesticides:
Most garden members do not have a lot of knowledge about chemical pesticides.  It is therefore a much better idea to use "organic" or "natural" methods to control unwanted insects on your own small plot.  Lady bugs are inexpensive and will munch aphids all day long and will have little bitty baby lady bugs to continue doing so all season long.  Potato Beetles are easily picked off by hand.  Squash bugs are easily deterred early in their season with diatomaceous earth.  Nematodes are like charity:  They will cover a multitude of "sinful" earth dwelling pests.  Bees still need to pollinate your flowers no matter what other nasty insects are around them.  Give the bees a break, they've been having a tough time lately.

11.  There are several members of the Gardening Committee that are happy to help you if you have concerns or you just need some know-how.  Gardening Committee member are generally available on Saturdays from 8 am to 10 am.

12.  The garden will shut down this fall a couple of weeks into October.  After the killing frost it is expected that ALL garden members come to their plots and clear off equipment and get it ready to be plowed under in the coming week or so.  Emails will be sent pinpointing that date when the season arrives.

13.  May the Spirit of the Lord be with you as you learn more about taking care of his Earth and coaxing into productivity.  May you bear much fruit this year.
